OvuSense Review Part 3: Mr. Spermy Is Going into the Trash!

Well, hello there, friend! Long time no OvuSense review, eh? I can’t believe it has been 5 months since I wrote my last review for this contraption that is “according to their research,” suppose to boost your odds of conception by leaps and bounds. In my defense, though, four days after publishing that hilarious review (OvuSense Review Part 2: Oh No! Did It Get Lost Up There), my colon ruptured due to infected diverticula, and I spent my entire summer either in the hospital or on complete bed rest. Needless to say, OvuSense was not being used, and Mr. Spermy was furthest from my mind. In fact, my trusty nightly companion was so far out of my mind that I forgot why I had even teased you at the end of my last review with the title, “Mr. Spermy Goes into the Trash!”

That is until I started using it again a few weeks ago…

Because friends, as I held Mr. Spermy in my hands for the first time in ages, all of the intense emotions came rushing back to me as I remembered that one specific morning five months ago when I nearly lost my…

But before I tell you the reason I almost lost my…err…cool…and Mr. Spermy was on his way out the door snug as a bug in a white kitchen trash bag with the words “good riddance” written on it, let me explain to you how OvuSense works.

First of all, you take the medical-grade sensor (which I have named Mr. Spermy because he looks like a giant sperm), and you insert it into your vajayjay much like you would a tampon. The sensor then stays overnight as it records your core temperature while you snore, drool, and toss and turn, all while dreaming of babies. In the morning, after you wake up sad because the babies in your dream are not really your babies (some of you feel me on this one), you remove the Sensor and download its data to the OvuSense App. Once connected, the app then uses patented technology to predict and then confirm ovulation with 99% clinically proven accuracy! Crazy cool, right?

Well, It is.

Until you can’t get your Sensor to download the information that is collected.

Y’all, everything was going hunky dory five months ago until one morning I woke up, took ol’ Mr. Spermy out of his comfy home (aka…my va-jay-jay), and stuck it to the back of my phone (of course, after washing him off first) for it to download his knowledge. Yes, you read that right; to download the information, you need to stick Mr. Spermy to the back of your phone (see picture). I know it seems somewhat gross, and if you are a germ-a-phobic, phobic might not be the device for you, but if you don’t think about it, and you block out the thought of where it has been, it’s really no big deal. Or at least that’s what I tell myself. And I tell others when they ask to borrow my phone, or I give it to them to hold for them to watch a funny video, or I request that they look at a Facebook meme I find hilarious.

But back to the point of this post…

On that early summer morning, while still rubbing the boogers out of my eye, Mr. Spermy started to become defiant. Much like the middle school children I used to counsel back in my social work days. You see, I took Mr. Spermy and placed him on the back of my phone to only have the connection become “interrupted,” therefore not allowing the information to be downloaded. I thought no big deal as I then removed him from the back of my phone to try again. However, this happened over and over again until after nearly 15+ minutes of taking it off, putting it back on, taking it off, putting it back on that it finally worked! Can I get a hallelujah wave offering?

Thank you! But friends, go ahead and put it down because guess what? It did it again the next morning. And then the next. And the next. I felt as though I had not just to find the “sweet spot” on the back of my phone but also hold my tongue out, pat my head, rub my belly, and tickle my cat all at the same time for it to connect finally.

SO FRUSTRATING! And all this BEFORE my first sip of coffee. No Bueno!

But because I am not one to complain, I just kept dealing with it. That is until one morning, after wasting 42 minutes of my life (but who’s counting) trying to find the “sweet spot” on my phone for it to connect and provide the VITAL information I needed, I contacted support and told them I was DONZO! Trying to conceive was already aggravating and frustrating enough. I didn’t need one more thing added to it. ‘Cause…let’s be real…when dealing with infertility…

But y’all, let me just cut to the chase and say that he never ended up in the trash, and it’s all because of their awesome five-star customer service! I don’t remember our exact conversation, but when I contacted them with my disappointment, they suggested a few solutions that I couldn’t help but roll my eyes at because, let’s be real, I had already tried every single one…including standing on my head while reciting the Lord’s prayer. And I let them know this in my “not-so-sweet” voice. But to my dismay, they validated my frustration and offered to send me a new one within a day without hesitation.

One day!

Can I get another hallelujah wave offering?

At this time, go ahead and keep it up because everything is unicorns and rainbows again! I haven’t had to stand on my head, pat my head, rub my belly, tickle my cat, find the “sweet spot,” or recite the Lord’s prayer to get my sensor to work. I am instead pleased to report that Mr. Spermy does his job collecting the information needed every night, and downloading it every morning without any connection issues. But if he does start acting like a fool again, I will contact customer service in confidence that customer service will resolve the issues. And resolve them quickly.

My whole point in wanting to write this post is not to gripe and complain about Mr. Spermy not wanting to connect, but to brag and rave about how helpful customer service was to me even when I wasn’t bragging and raving about their product.

I also wanted to point out that it’s not just me who the OvuSense Support Center bends over backward for, but many others who have from time to time expressed in the closed OvuSense Facebook group their same concerns regarding their device also not wanting to connect (which I later learned was due to a bad batch). I loved reading how each person within the group who voiced their frustration was treated with respect and ultimately sent a new device.

So friends, if you are on the fence about purchasing your own Mr. Spermy because you fear it will break or won’t work properly, thus wasting hundreds of dollars, please know that the OvuSense customer service department is amazing! They will do anything and everything to make sure that you always have a working device in your hand…err…va-jay-jay…because they know that your goal is getting pregnant. And their goal is the same.

  1. Thanks for sharing your review. You had me laughing with the various ways you tried to get it to work. 😂 I was going to talk to my husband about possibly doing this once we are able to get off the BC (bc of “lovely” cysts). By any chance is there a promo code we can use? I know you had one back June, but I didn’t know if you had a new one. Thank you!

      1. Thank you, Elisha! ❤️ We’ve been trying over seven years. It would be amazing if this could work and have a miracle.

  2. They had to send me a new one too after about 2 months. I use mine through the ipad with the reader that you plug in each time. As long as I totally exit out and then re-open the app every time I use it, it seems to work fine. You’re right customer service is great. It would have been good though to have my full chart (instead of the 5 days I missed) for the month where I got my BFP and then miscarried just to see what was happening but I still, I think it’s helpful and I’m still using it.

  3. I ordered one way back when you first posted about them…. and mine had the same connecting issue during my second month using it.
And then the replacement did as well… three days after I got it.
And after the THIRD one did the exact same thing within a week of it being shipped to me?
Well, at that point, I was SO frustrated and angry, I decided I’d cut my losses and forget about requesting a fourth. It was way too emotional for me when they would crap out.
I believe this is an issue Ovasense is well aware of, or else they wouldn’t send out two replacements free. I had high hopes, but they are selling a faulty product. I my opinion it is a battery issue. So now I have three broken sensors, and a year subscription that’s worthless. This is totally a buyer beware product.
Thanks for the review girly… I truly hope your experience is different from mine!

    1. Ugh! I hate to hear that. Did they ever give you suggestions on how to connect it better? They say to take off the case before trying to connect it but i found leaving the case on my phone was better and it worked faster.

      1. Yep. I went though alllllll the things. Six times. Lol And I tried my husband’s phone too. It was just the sensors.

I do wonder about the bad batch thing… almost makes me wish I had tried for number four.
But while my first two did come from the same lot, my third had a different lot number and date of manufacturing… so I don’t know that I’d have had anymore success anyway.

I know you’ve been there, so you know how crazy these connection issues can make you, and it was seriously putting me in a bad mood all day every time it wouldn’t download, so for my sanity I just had to quit.

I wasn’t really crazy about how the app charting was set up, and while customer service was friendly, at one point I had to tell my story to four different people for one service email, and I really wish they would stick to one person per issue. Lastly, every question I ever asked customer service was ignored. They would never answer the questions, just offer to send a new sensor.

I dunno. I just was over it by that point!

Thanks for replying, and I just want to add, your Facebook posts really make my day. You are so uplifting, but also aren’t afraid to let the darker sides and truths of infertility out once in awhile as well. I know you encourage and help so many people, and you are always in my prayers!

  4. thank you for sharing your story. also, hesitating back and forth buying this product i want to give a shot. the code you provided doesn’t seem to be working? 😦 after spending on ovulation kits and pregnancy would think can catch a break. do you have another code ? thanks

    1. BABYBIRD was the one they gave me to post that would not expire. Let me see if i can email support and ask them why it didnt work.

  5. After reading your blog I will definitely be purchasing this product. Thank you so much for sharing!!! Very helpful! With that being said the discount code isn’t working. Is that something you would be able to help me out with?

    1. jk jk jk! it works if you use all lower case. My fault!!!! O-M-G I’m so flipping excited!!!!

      1. Yay! So glad to hear that it worked!! Let me know how you like it! I had to take a break from using it but will be starting up again this cycle. I’ll be posting more reviews soon!

  6. Hey Elisha, thanks for the update! Any further notes or updates on this product now that you’ve been using it for a while? I was thinking of purchasing one since my cycles are all over the dang place but wanted to see if it actually helped you in the long run before I pulled the trigger. Thanks again for your deep and honest blog! It gives me hope. 🙂

    1. Hey Terri! So far, no. But that’s probably my fault as I have not been faithful in using it. I have had such a busy few months that using it and even TTC hasn’t been on the forefront of my mind. However with this next cycle I plan on continuing to use it through the fall/winter and hope to do another update. Many of my friends have purchased it and while they have not gotten pregnant yet, they LOVE it! They love seeing how their body is working and if the supplements are making a difference, etc.

    1. what kind of updates are you looking for? I am still using it and I highly recommend it for anyone who is wanting to track their temp but hate “the whole thermometer when you wake up” thing.

  7. I’ve used ovusense now for 18 cycles. My conclusion is that it’s a very expensive thermometer. It has never given me that 24 hour notice of ovulation. And I think that is the reason most women buy it. After talking to many of
There ovusense users we all believe this does not live up to its claims. My cycles are pretty regular from 29-33days but I do have PCOS. My temps are nice and steady because I control my PCOS with diet.
Just wanted to give others more information before they buy it.
