Putting the Cart Before the Horse?

Putting the Cart Before the Horse

Sing, O barren woman, you who never bore a child; burst into song, shout for joy, you who were never in labor…

Enlarge your place of tent, stretch your tent curtains wide, do not hold back; lengthen your cords, strengthen your stakes.

Do not be afraid; you will not suffer shame. Do not fear disgrace, you will not be humiliated. ” Isaiah 54

Barrenness. What a painful and frustrating condition. Yet this verse tells those who are barren to rejoice–“Sing, O barren woman–shout for joy!” It even takes it a step further and tells them to make room by enlarging their tent and not holding back or being afraid of suffering, shame, or fearful of disgrace.

I have read this verse a hundred times, yet this week, when I stumbled upon it, I became nervous and terrified yet excited as I felt challenged to do something far outside my comfort zone–far beyond my current level of faith.

If you have been following my blog for any length of time, you might be wondering what could stretch my faith any further. Especially when, on the 17th of every month, I make a fool of myself by celebrating and rejoicing over a child that hasn’t even been conceived yet. I am notorious among my friends and family for thinking, speaking, and acting as if my barrenness is no more. However, this week, after reading the above verses, I realized I am holding back.

It’s easy and innocent enough for me to purchase small items of diapers, cute onesies, blankets, and pacifiers each month because it’s safe. It once stretched my faith and made me uncomfortable, but now it’s just as easy as buying a gallon of milk or a stick of gum at the local grocery store. But doing the bigger things? Buying the big-ticket items? The ones that would cause me to “enlarge my place of tent”–now that goes far beyond my comfort zone and current level of faith.

In fact, just last week, a friend of mine approached me at church and said she keeps hearing the word “prepare.” As soon as she spoke the word, my legs felt like wet noodles, and my stomach became queasy as the next word I heard was “nursery.” She didn’t say it, but that is what was spoken in my heart. I have fought the idea for days. I wrestled with it in my mind. I reasoned why it didn’t make sense to do this now, this early. Planning a nursery is one thing (which I also haven’t done), but actually following through with the plans is crazy–even for me

Just the mere thought of being humiliated when others come over and see that I have a completed nursery prepared but no baby in sight makes me sweat has my heart skip a few beats, and my breathing become irregular. I shamefully and foolishly think that if I were pursuing adoption or fertility treatments, then it wouldn’t look so “odd,” and I wouldn’t be so afraid to take that leap into the unknown. I know; where is my faith now, right? But I can’t see the benefit of putting the cart before the horse–at least not now, not yet. It’s too risky.

But that’s when I think of Noah.

Many would say he put the cart before the horse when he built a boat the size of a football field in preparation for a flood despite never before seeing a drop of rain. This task couldn’t have been easy for him physically, let alone spiritually or emotionally. Can you imagine the looks he must have received and the comments from people as they passed by him hammering the nails into the sides of this massive 450-foot-long boat?

“Hey, Noah! What are you doing?! There isn’t even a cloud in the sky!”

“Noah! The whole town thinks you are crazy!”

“Stop embarrassing yourself with all your nonsense and foolish talk of rain!”

“You don’t even know what a sprinkle looks like, so how could you claim a flood?”

“You should be in a straitjacket!”

“Hey, Noah! You are delusional! There isn’t even a chance for rain!”

“Do you want the number for a good shrink?”

I can’t imagine the level of anxiety and fear Noah would have felt over being humiliated if the rain didn’t come, let alone enough to cause a giant flood. Despite his fear and the constant persecution from non-believers, he was steadfast in his obedience to God and continued to prepare. In the end, he wasn’t the foolish one. All of his “crazy” faith-filled thinking, speaking, and acting ended up saving his family.

I want to be like Noah–completely obedient despite the fears, never holding back, and so crazy in my faith. Therefore, in celebration of Josiah Day, I’m not just going to rejoice by putting on my monthly party hat, blowing on my noisemaker, and throwing up the confetti.  I’m moving on to verse two and enlarging my place of tent

Yep, that’s right–I’ve decided to put the cart before the horse and build my ark nursery. I’m pulling out all the stops, looking ridiculously crazy and risking humiliation (even persecution) as I head to the big city today to hammer in my first nail, so to speak. I will price out our favorite cribs, dressers, gliders, and other “big-ticket–enlarging my tent” nursery essentials and purchase them in the upcoming weeks. Am I scared? You betcha! Am I nervous? Like a long-tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs. But am I excited? Absolutely! I am also praying that the horse isn’t too far behind the cart.

Happy Josiah Day!

Would you like to hear an interesting and fun fact? The Bible says in Genesis that the floodwaters came on the 17th day and then rested on a mountain top five months later, also on the 17th day. I am really starting to love the number 17.

      1. CHief and I started looking at nurseries last night on Pinterest. It felt surreal and scary. We also picked some of our favorite names (we’re in big disagreement on this). Its like “slow down librarian, you’re not even five weeks yet”, but I just want to believe so much that this is going to happen, so that’s what I’m doing.

      2. oh yes! Believe! You are pregnant RIGHT now so savor and enjoy every minute.

We walk by faith, not by sight. 2 Cor. 5:7

        You got this! xo

  1. This post has me tearing up. I’m not sure why…I think it’s because I am just so proud of you! God’s word is so true and He is speaking to you, just like Noah, telling you to prepare. Regardless of how it will look, you are choosing to obey. And you will be rewarded for your faithfulness. Josiah is coming!!! Love ya, friend. <3

    1. Ahhh, you must be hormotional! tehehe! Thank you so much for supporting me. This isn’t an easy thing to do and your encouragement is priceless. xo

  2. Awww!! I am so excited for you…and so proud!! This is true faith when all you have is a promise to go by…but, truly what else do you need??? All Noah had was a promise…all Abraham had was a promise…all Kevin and I had was a promise. No other outward proof or evidence…but FAITH IS the evidence of things not seen. You…taking this step…is taking what is not seen into what IS seen and giving it visual evidence. Every time you look in that nursery, you will have tangible items that will cement your faith even deeper into the power of GOD and what He is going to do. So, let me know when you decide on everything….colors, theme, etc. Because I want to contribute some small thing to this evidence! Who cares how any of this looks to other people? To some of us, it looks exactly right. 🙂

    1. Thank you so much Cheryl. I am fairly certain birds and bird cages will be involved in the decor 🙂 I have a pillow that a friend of mine gave me (its square) and I had planned on using the colors from it for the room. The pillow itself has a few bird eggs inside of a nest. I just love it.

  3. Happy Josiah Day!! I said it on Facebook, but I’ll say it again. I truly believe that sometimes we need to invite things into our lives in big ways – a life size vision board! I cant wait to hear all about your shopping trip, and all of the wonderful things Josiah guided your hand to to prepare for him!

    1. Thanks so much girlie for your support and encouragement. It truly means a lot to me when I feel absolutely crazy and surrounded by people rolling their eyes and thinking I have gone cray, cray. lol

  4. You and Caroline touched on the same thing today. Preparing your hearts and home to receive God’s blessings. It’s important; before conceiving I dropped the ball. I had been purchasing stuff that I could hide so no one would think I was crazy. All of a sudden I had this huge collection of stuff that I had purchased in faith. All of a sudden my faith was uncomfortable and I started to get rid of the items. I gave away collectible books and things I had gathered for my baby because I was ashamed. Less than 3 months later I was pregnant and it was something we knew we would embark on. I’m not saying the same would happen to you, you know my story. Instead I want to encourage you to be radically obedient with instruction from the Lord. I’m currently repurchasing so many items that I had for my precious babies because I felt shame. God is going to honor you Elisha. You’ll see!

    1. Thank you so much for your support and encouragement. Anytime I feel silly or just way to ridiculous I am going to come back and read this comment to help boost and fire me back up again to just keep building my ark. love ya girl! xo

  5. What a fantastic leap of faith! I love it!!! J and I were actually talking about this not too long ago…The hard part is, because of daycare, I already have many big ticket items (not the ones I would choose if I was picking for my baby) that are taking up the space in our would be nursery. But maybe I can start painting and decorating it the way I would want. 🙂 I was reading Day 25 ” The Power Tool of Praise” this morning in the book you gave me. I then went onto read the scriptures it gave at the end. Psalm 117:1,2 led me to start singing this song in my head

    http://youtu.be/rVYcDOXczus

Have a wonderful time pricing out your nursery!

    1. ahhh that is such a great song! I say in regards to the nursery and expanding your tent…you just do what you can. The bible says that God rewards those who seek Him. Acting out in faith is such a bold way of seeking Him and I truly believe you will be rewarded for whatever it is you are doing.

  6. Happy Josiah Day! “If you build it, they will come”…hopefully you’ve seen a Field of Dreams 😉 Enjoy the day planning and shopping!

  7. DH asked me last night to stop buying baby stuff. It hurts too much right now. I told him I was just trying to be positive, but if it bothers him I will stop. I’ll have to share this post with him in a few weeks, when his heart is more open to the idea. Have fun shopping!

    1. Ahh,..I hate that he is hurting in such a way :/ Yes, maybe in a few weeks you can show him this post…give him the scriptures and remind him of Noah. It is so important to act out what we believe to be true by faith so maybe before showing him this post, you can help encourage and build is faith in the area of believing that he will be a father. I know that I wouldn’t be able to do this or have my husband agree to this if we both didn’t believe through faith that we would be parents. Sending you hugs and praying for you both. xo

  8. Faith and obedience. Girl you better leap ;=)Let go and let God! Yes, of any fear, embarrassment, concerns that you’ve lost your mind!! It doesn’t matter because you are getting things prepared for Josiah! I believe with you, yes indeed I am in agreement. If God said it you better believe it. I am so excited to see God show up and show out! God is going to put his Super on your natural and Josiah is coming. I don’t know when but I know he is…I believe it!! Begin to thank God for Josiah right now because it is done. Thank him for his beautiful eyes, his nose, his strong legs, beautiful lips, perfect health… hey, all I know is the doctors and your body may say and show one thing but that is irrelevant when we’re dealing with the Father because nothing is impossible for God!

    Be Blessed!

    LaTrice

    1. amen and amen to everything that you said! You have been such a wonderful source of love, support, and encouragement to me today! I truly appreciate it. You rock! xo

  9. I say do it. For the last three years while we did pursue treatment, I held off. Friends gave us clothes and supplies but we didn’t have a system, so they piled up in odd drifts and dregs. Mostly though everything became a compromise or a thing we would do later, when we were actually pregnant. And that spread throughout the whole house. It was like, “why bother replacing the floors? We should wait until after the kids are toddlers….” But now 5 years has passed and our floors look awful and we still don’t have children 😉

The only thing I would say is that when I did set up some items here and there (never fully so that could have been part of my issue) I did feel a lot of resentment and loss because it was a visual reminder of what I didn’t have. But it’s all easily remedied and if it will give your heart comfort to build your tent then that is what you’re meant to do.

    I hope you’ll post pics?

    1. Yes mam, i will post pics as I go…mainly for accountability because you know the devil is going to try and talk me out of expressing my faith. I gotta keep pressing on 🙂

  10. I love reading your blog! Your willingness to put your faith where your mouth is, is so encouraging to me. Thank you for being open with your journey, living out Hebrews 10:24. I know I am not the only one being spurred on in my faith through your blog.

I have been hearing words from God over the past year about my job and several other areas of life, and I have been reasoning away those words. This post and reminder of Noah’s faith is one of several signs over the past couple of days that God has been gracefully giving me to light a fire under me. Can’t wait to see pics of the nursery 🙂

    1. I loved reading this comment and knowing that not only is God spurring me but also others who might stumble across this blog. Thank you for reading, commenting and giving me such encouragement. Now it’s time to go build your ark with whatever that might look like in your life 🙂 xo

  11. Amazing! You are one brave faithful inspiring woman! I know i couldnt actually buy the items with out knowing. But God is good, and he will never lead his flock astray.

    1. You are so right in that He wont but never forget that the written word is for everyone 🙂 He wants all who are barren to rejoice and expand their tents. It’s such a bold act of faith and He loves it when His children act out boldly and trust in Him to always provide the desires of our hearts 🙂 Step out and build that ark girlie 🙂 xo

  12. Seriously, another day and another inspiration from you. I am always impressed with your strength and faith. I know it isn’t easy, but you do such a good job at working at it. I’m so proud of you! I hope you and Goldilocks enjoy Josiah Day and shopping. I’m rejoicing with you today. Happy Josiah Day!

    1. Thanks so much girl! I hope you go out this weekend and buy something fun for your future child 🙂 God doesn’t show favoritism 🙂 xo

      1. I have a hope chest that my parents bought me before I got married. Now that I don’t need it as a hope chest for marriage, we are turning it into a hope chest for a baby. I am going to love filling it with items for Baby Provence…or Babies Provence after the way this weekend went! 🙂

  13. YES!!!!! YES!!!!! A million yeses. Plan for the miracle God is preparing for you. Thank Him daily for a child you have yet to recieve. Watch how abundantly He will fulfill his promise and bring you your Josiah. Happy Josiah Day! You have my support 1000% and more.

    1. I sure will post photos! This isn’t an easy thing to do but faith doesn’t make things easy or comfortable but it does make things possible. And I think it’s time for you start planning now too…because you will be a joyful mother of children some day and in some way. I believe it! xo

  14. Love Josiah day!! Love that you are acting on God’s promises!! Preparing for the fulfillment! lord, we say YES and Amen to all you have for Elisha!! We sing your praises, Oh Lord!

    1. Thank you so much for always giving me your support and encouragement especially when I look like I have gone cray, cray! LOL! Didn’t you mention in a post once that you were starting a nursery? Have you done it yet?

    1. Hehe! Thank you for your excitement girl! It makes it easier to be excited for something when others around you are excited too! xo

    1. I have two choices. The first is to be offended. The second is to love. I will choose love because people who are rude and bully usually are deficit in love. I sense that to be you and I am truly sorry. No matter what you say to me, I will always love you and so will God. Have a great weekend 🙂

      1. Yes…but you need to know Gods voice to do that which means you need to know God. Since you don’t believe in God, you might just be disqualified to have your rude interpretation considered.

  15. It is biblical that if you make the space God will fill it!!
I cannot wait to see pictures of your baby’s nursery. I’m all about speaking a thing and the power of your words.
Here are some sermons from my church that I think you might really encouraging, stretching, and maybe even entertaining (I think my pastor drinks a lot if red bull😉). Hehe!

  16. Hey girl, I have the internet available for an hour or so and of course I’m catching up on reading 😉 I wanted to tell you that I had a dream this morning (on the 17th of all days) that you posted a blog post sharing the news that you were pregnant. You had a pregnancy test with two very dark lines! I’m so excited for you – I just know that the Lord is about to move in your life. Love you girl, XOXO!

    1. Your comment gave me chills because I have been praying for months to God that when I do get that positive, that they will be the darkest two lines ever. I don’t want any squinters or lines that make you guess and keep reguessing. I to pee on that stick and it say BAM! YOU ARE PREGNANT! LOL!!

Thank you for always being there for me. You are awesome! xo

  17. This is so very exciting. You can do it. God has really been speaking to me in a big way to hang in there and don’t give up and I too have been getting the word prepare and now have a pinterest board (a secret 1 mind you) of nursery room ideas. You are not alone in your quest of nursery room set up….have fun and enjoy choosing all your new items ready for when you guys bring home your baby bird xx

    1. Thank you for the support sugars! It means so much to me. From the sound of your recent blog posts, it looks like it might be time for you to prepare in faith as well 🙂 I’m excited for you. xo

  18. Happy Josiah Day!!! 😀
I’m so inspired & once again encouraged by your post today! I’m encouraged by how boldly & confidently you’re walking in faith & obedience to God. I’m reminded of 2 Timothy 1:7–“For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power…”–& I’m so uplifted by your example. xoxo

      1. You may be afraid, but youre stepping out in faith & He will reward your obedience. I’m afraid to make my Pinterest baby board public (even though I’ve felt led to make it public), so I’m so inspired & encouraged by your obedience to follow His lead. Thank you!!! Xoxo

    1. Thank you so much girl! I wouldn’t be able to do this without your support and encouragement. This isn’t an easy thing to do fo’sho!

  19. Oh how I LOVE this! Buy those “Big ticket items to expand your tent!!” It is very true. Knowing that God is leading you to these decisions must be comforting. I am listening to Him as well. He keeps telling me to “Not give up” and “Find a way”….gotta go with what the Big man says 🙂 Can’t wait to see what you buy…pics please 🙂 xoxo

    1. Yes you do 🙂 You should step out and do the same? His written word is for everyone to grab a hold of 😉

And yes, I will post pictures once I order it and it comes in 🙂

      xo

  20. Extravagant bold faith makes way for extravagant bold answers to prayer. Isaiah 54 is near and dear to my heart ( I wrote a Bible Study on this chapter of the Bible) so I was excited to see the verses you shared were those 1st for commands to sing into our barren places, spread out and enlarge our tent for the habitation of His righteous blessings, and to FEAR NOT in the midst of the all to ‘real’ we see in our every day existence.
Praying for many joyful songs to rise up in your heart and for the blessings of bold prayers answered mightily!
    Blessings,
    Dawn

    1. Thank you so much Dawn for reading and giving me such an encouraging comment. I appreciate it so much! I hope you have a great weekend.

  21. I love and admire that you are taking this leap of faith. After reading this post I wrote a letter to my son Noah (the son that I am praying gives us very soon). I too know that God will fulfill his promise. I am praying for twins….but felt compelled to write to Noah today. I know that one day he will read it and I also smiled when I read what Noah has taught you. Noah means ‘rest’ and like you I have decided to rest in the Lord. Thanks again for sharing your faith and for encouraging me to increase mine. Writing this letter and sharing it with y husband was a BOLD move for me. You helped give me the courage and it felt great to sign the letter ‘mommy’. xo

  22. Happy Josiah day!!! Please share pics as you do the nursery, look forward to seeing!

    1. I will try to post pics as I progress along but I don’t want to cause pain to anyone. I understand that some people might not want to see it :/

  23. I, myself, have difficulty jumping out of that comfort zone. J and I have disagreements as to what I can and can’t by before we conceive and it’s viable. This has spoken to me in a way that encourages me to listen to my heart.

  24. I hope to post a video of me sharing at my baby shower about what God did in me during my time of infertility. But one thing I learned is to take God at his word. That is something he clearly has/is teaching you. So do it! For me, I didn’t like I believe I should have and once pregnant, was so overwhelmed with how ignorant I was about baby and pregnancy stuff because I had avoided it so much. Learn what you can now! Pin all the nursey pins till you know what you want and go for it! He has made you a promise and his word shows he keeps it, and my own story shows he keeps it!

Can’t wait to see how it comes along 🙂 I’m 3 weeks from my due date and still finishing mine….ha

    1. oh thank you so much for this encouraging comment. You don’t know how much it means to me. This is so far outside my comfort zone but God never asked us to live in our comfort zone when it comes to faith so that’s why I am stepping out. I know His word will never fail and He isn’t out to put me to shame or embarrass me…so here it goes 🙂

    1. Thanks girlie! I found a crib and dresser that I like but whew…it’s going to be hard to make this purchase in a couple of weeks when I have saved the money.

  25. Elisha, God will indeed honor your faith, of this I am sure. I remember several months ago as I was sitting on my couch, mourning over Noah’s death, which turned into mourning over years of barrenness and it was threatening to become this downward spiral of anger and despair over unfulfilled promises. Something rose up inside of me and said, “No, I’m not heading down this path. I am a woman of faith and faith without works is dead.” So I dragged myself off that couch and begin painting the nursery. After that day, every month when my period came, I headed off to the store and bought something for our promised baby. Yes, I too, am that crazy lady with a nursery in progress. Don’t give up, my friend. In the end, we win. It is finished means it is finished. It’s a done deal.

    1. yay! We can be psych ward buddies together 😉 Yes, I am just like you and when my period comes, I head off to the store or online to purchase something. It pulls me out of the pit of despair and increases my hope just a bit more. Keep believing and acting out your faith girile! xo

  26. I say, do what brings you joy. If you feel compelled to prepare a nursery, do it and try not to let the naysayers get you down (harder to say then do, I know, but be confident!). God wants us to prepare now for our future blessings. (And personally, I’m kind of jealous because my girl is 3 1/2 months old and her nursery is still a hot mess, lol! She was a preemie and is still in the hospital, so I have time, but it would be so nice if it was already done!) Anyway, be bold and remember that God loves you and is so happy when you heed His messages. If you are inspired to decorate a nursery, do it and know it will make Him so happy! Praying that Josiah is on his way very soon!

  27. Love this! Earlier this year my husband had applied for a job, and we really felt like the Lord had promised us this job and that it was in His will for us to accept it. As we were debating back and forth on what to do, my best friend just said “maybe you need to do some faith packing.” So we did! We went and found some boxes and started packing up our house before he had a job offer. In the end, I actually wound up acceptinga job and we moved to this new city before my husband even had his job offer! {Our parents thought we had lost our minds!!!} But God was faithful and about 45 days after we moved here, my husband started his new job!!

I don’t know why I can tell that story so many times, but when it comes to our infertility have such a hard time trusting in Him. Maybe it’s just because infertility is such a huge “heart thing?” Or maybe just because there have been years of disappointments on this long journey….but your post today really inspired me to start walking in my faith more. Maybe I need to do some nursery planning as well!

    1. I just love your testimony. I think sometimes we put our problems in different categories (big–small—hard—easy) and have more faith in one area of our life but maybe not so much in another. I knew a women that trusted and believed in the Lord for her finances but had trouble when it came to her healing. She was a very wealthy woman. One day, a pastor told her to use that same faith she had for her finances and start applying it to healing. As she did, she stopped being sick all of the time with allergies and sinus infections. I also think that when it comes to physical issues, we are too busy looking at the natural and so our logical mind starts to talk to us. Does that make sense? I say go and build that nursery, buy those diapers, or do whatever it is the Lord is leading you to do. xo

      1. That makes sense. It definitely doesn’t help when you have a doctor sitting in front of you telling you all of the things that are wrong. Thanks for the encouragement!

  28. Love this post! I recently bought a very pretty decorative mirror for “my nursery.” I haven’t hung it up yet, because I want it to go over the crib, and well I don’t have that yet. And today God gave me Hebrews 11:11!! There’s a beautiful story brewing for the both of us!

      1. You’ve really encouraged me, if this isn’t my month I think I might just have to go out and make some sort of baby purchase. That would just keep me trusting for the NEXT cycle.
