Pets Aren’t Kids?!

family pic“I love Annie Mae so much I feel like I gave birth to her!”  Yes, yes…those words actually came out of my mouth one day when talking to my husband about my oldest cat, who is ten years old. I might have also followed that statement with something along the lines of me being willing to throw myself into oncoming traffic to save her life if needed. This, of course, made him shudder at the thought of me becoming a pancake in the middle of the road while the little furball hisses at everything and everyone ran free. But what can I say? I don’t have any children of my own and my four-legged friends, well, they are my kids.

Do you treat your bundle of fur more like the offspring you wish you had rather than an animal? If so, you are not alone. Many of us who are struggling to conceive (as well as many others who are not) treat our dogs, cats, birds, bunnies, and even roosters with the unconditional love and nurturing that would typically be expressed through a parent-child relationship.

We take them shopping, tuck them away in strollers for a walk through the park, arrange for doggie play dates, and even buy them more pairs of shoes and outfits than they could ever need.  Many might deem this behavior as over the top doting and pampering as they firmly believe pets aren’t kids. However, to you and me, they are ‘our kids,’ and we take our role as ‘parents’ very seriously and without apology.

I have two fur babies and would proudly upgrade to the title of “crazy cat lady” by having more if it were not for my husband, who has a two pet rule. He claims Noah brought only two of every animal in the ark, and “this ark home” has hit its limit. Sigh. Regardless of how many I have, there is no shame in my game when it comes to pampering them!  I dress them up for holidays, talk baby talks to them when they enter the room, and rock them when they let me, and as I mentioned before, I would possibly risk my life for them.

Therefore, in honor of my furbabies and your furbabies, I have dedicated this week’s funnies to our amazing four-legged children…because after all, to us, PETS ARE KIDS.

Enjoy!

  1. You cat-babies are so cute! My orange one ALWAYS runs to his food bowl when people are around. He’s on a diet – and doesn’t like it lol

    xo

    1. Thanks girlie! Lola’s bowl could be completely full but she will still hover over it as if she needs more. It’s funny!

      1. I love their names! Cats are so weird about their food. Mine beg at “dinner time” and will lose their minds if we ignore them lol

  2. I loved this laughing your way through infertility. It was cute and true on so many levels. I have a Fur Baby too. Cruiser and I get into so much mischief together. At any sign of sickness we are at the vet.

  3. I often wonder if I could love anybody–furry or human–more than I love my Kitty. He is my baby and our relationship is very parent/child. We’re getting a puppy on Saturday & my biggest concern is that this may drive a wedge between Kitty & myself. Hoping Kitty and I stay close even as our family expands! Love your kitties 🙂 XOXO

    1. oh I hope the two of them get along 😉 I got Annie Mae ten years ago and Lola three years ago….Annie still hates Lola and refuses to be in the same room as her.

  4. Hehe, love your Monday funnies, it always brightens up the start of the week! 🙂 Love the picture about ‘cat hair on everything’!

I know you have already been nominated (a few times I think! 😉 ), but I have nominated you for a Very Inspiring Blogger Award. Thank you for your amazing positivity and encouragement to grow closer to God even when times are tough! x

    1. awe thank you so much for the nomination! I might have to do it again but this time put seven interesting facts about my hubs! hehe! He would die!

  5. Ha, love it! Our 7 animals are certainly our babies. If the limit to your “ark” is two of every animal, well then just expand the variety you’ve got 😉 Giraffe, anyone?? xx

    1. I think my husband would go nuts if I added another animal of any kind :/ I’m lucky to have the two that are here 🙂 lol!

  6. Aw! Your furbabies are so cute! I have two of my own kitty babies and yes, they are my babies. No doubt about it 🙂 Loved all the pics. So funny! And wow! That naked couple! haha

Btw – according to your hubby’s logic, you should still be able to get a dog or two. Two of each animal right? 😉

    1. LOL! Actually he technically has “no pet inside” rule so I think I am pushing it :/ I would get a dog for outside but our yard isn’t big enough (we live in town) and I think cats are just easier to take care of. I’m a lazy pet owner 😉

  7. This is soooooo accurate (I say as I strap my snazzily-dressed Chihuahua into his ultra deluxe stroller for a day shopping in town)!!! 😀

    1. LOVE THIS!! I have often wanted a cute little dog so that I could do this with…my cats do not seem to travel well :/

  8. Ur husbands Noah rule…hillarious! Ur babies are gorgeous. I keep contemplating on the thought of having pets but somehow tend to dissuade myself eventually. But someday…. 🙂

  9. Pets ARE KIDS! 🙂 I’ve had my furry son for 9 years and got my daughter after about a year and a half of trying unsuccessfully to have human babies. 🙂 She and I have the most special bond, they are both therapy dogs to me. I am going to post some pics of their crazy cuteness soon!

  10. I am right there with you…I adore them. Even when they take up the entire bed, even when they chew up things they shouldn’t. I already feel so blessed just to have them in our lives! And your kitty-meows are adorable!! I hope you are doing okay, I know you got a wonderful smiley face not that long ago and it brought tears to my eyes!

    1. Thanks so much sugars! I’m hoping this is the cycle, but if not, I will just forge onto the next one and count my blessings that I even saw a smiley face 🙂 xo

  11. I have 4 furbabies! Two kities and 2 dogs. I love it when they are all piled on the couch with me and my husband like one big happy family. The dogs and the cats snuggle right up with each other. It’s so funny to see. We keep trying to figure out where we’d fit a baby, lol.

    1. That is so awesome! My cats do NOT cuddle together and if you catch them even in the same room it’s a miracle. :/

  12. LOL the picture of the naked couple. I admit I love my fur baby a little too much. I had to lock him inside today with no food or water because he was getting his teeth cleaned and wasn’t allowed to eat. I felt terrible all day. So bad I snuck out of work early to come home and sit with him. I’m loving the Monday Funnies!

    1. I debated on putting the pic of the naked couple in there but in the end, thought it just had to be included! And no shame about coming home from work early because I have taken off work to stay home with my sick kitty 🙂

    1. haha! Just today I was talking to my cat and telling her about my day…I am confident she heard me as she meowed after each time I paused 🙂 lol!

  13. Guilty! We have 3 dogs. A 15 yr old shih tzu with a stroller, a 7 yr old pug/chihuahua x and a 2 yr old doxie, chihuahua x. Our remaining cat is 14 and last september we lost our little love, a 19 yr old cat named Shalimar.

I know I’m the kind of person who will love and baby my fur children if/when actual children show up. I always feel like they’re like kids, but not, but just as special.
