Tales of Fostering

When You Feel Overwhelmed

She stands 34 inches tall, weighs approximately 30 pounds, has the voice of an angel, a giggle that will melt your heart, and the softest blonde curls you will ever touch. Her brown eyes will captivate and remind you why you traded in your schedule for hers and your wants for her needs. She is the newest addition to our home for the next 30 days through the Safe Families for Children program Daniel and I are involved in.

On Friday night at 5:30, dressed in pink, she stepped foot into my home, and to my surprise, she wasn’t scared, she wasn’t worried, and she was only shy for the first 60 seconds. She has only been saying “I’m three!” for two months and is absolutely full of life. She loves cheeseburgers, baby dolls, Mickey Mouse, and saying the phrase, “I got you!” as she giggles and jumps in your lap or tugs at your leg.

“I got you!”

Those three little words have been repeated so many times in the past 48 hours that I have grown numb to hearing them. However, at one point tonight, those seemingly insignificant words, “I got you!” became significant and noticeable again. You see, I was cleaning the living room and my mind was busy thinking about the worries of this life, the fear of the unknown, and the stress related to the upcoming week, when her sweet voice came running towards me giggling her favorite phrase, “I got you!”

But as she kept repeating it and tugging at my leg, her voice turned into the voice of my heavenly Daddy, the One who holds me in the palm of His hand. I could hear Him say in a calm and peaceful voice, “I got you!” It was also in that moment, as she kept tugging for my attention, that I realized her favorite phrase was also one of God’s favorite phrases too. And if I stopped to listen, if I stopped worrying and fretting for even just a second, I, too, would be able to feel Him tugging and saying, “I got you!”

As I look back to that moment when a 34-inch tall little girl who weighs approximately 30 pounds, has the voice of an angel, a giggle that will melt your heart, and the softest blonde curls you will ever touch came into my home, I think about how I was going to be the one who showed her the love of my heavenly Daddy. I think about how I would be the one who demonstrated to her how much He was caring for her through us. But as it turned out, in the short 48 hours that she has been by my side, God has used her to remind me how much He is loving and caring for me. He has reminded me that He is always running to me, tugging at my leg, and saying all day long, “I got you!” I have to stop and listen.

Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. John 14:1

When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears, and rescues them from all their troubles. Psalm 34:17

Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you. 1 Peter 5:7

    1. One of the first words out of her mouth this morning…”I got you!” I needed that reminder again this morning. I love how God uses anyone to get His simple messages across to us.

  2. It seems like these reminders come when we least expect it! What a perfect example of the Lord in action!!!

    1. I know right?! It was one of her first phrases again to me this morning which I needed because even though I was reminded of it this morning, I had forgotten the second my eyes popped open and I thought of my “to do” list…

  3. I love this. It is funny how many times it is “out of the mouth of babes” that we are reminded of our Father’s hand in our lives. He is truly watching over us and waiting to bless us and answer our prayers. What a beautiful way to remember that. Thank you for this.

    1. She is so precious!! Her curls that bounce as she runs down the hallway is so cute! I will say, I think I have thanked God a bagillion and one times that I will first have a boy. I consider myself fashionable, but when it comes to dressing little three year old girls and doing their hair in pig tails and bows…I am at a total loss!!! yikes!!

  9. This is awesome! I used to work for Safe Families Chicago…so glad you are connected to an awesome cause!! This lil one is special and blessed.

    1. Didn’t Safe Families start in Chicago? We have had 8 total children in our home since November 2012. It’s been a revolving door that’s for sure, but very rewarding.
